Smule: Karaoke Songs & Videos 11.5.5

Do what?

I didn't know online karaoke was a thing. When I first heard of Sing! Karaoke, I immediately shuddered. You see, I usually try not to hum too loud when I'm with friends and my favorite song comes up, no matter how much background noise there is or the excitement level. Putting my 'singing voice' out there on the Internet would be the equivalent of social death. Or at least that's what I imagine in my darkest dreams. So you can imagine how 'thrilled' I am for Sing! karaoke.

Be that as it may, even though I wouldn't even whimper when browsing on Sing!, I had quickly turned into a listener. Listening to a bunch of amateurs sing their hearts out while I'm on my phone half way around the world, (or across for you flat-earthers) is like snuggling in a warm bed while a storm is raging outside - Safe from ridicule, but free to cringe at others.

However, for those wishing to show off their talents, Sing! Karaoke is an adequate platform to do so. The songs are perfectly mastered without any voices, not like you would get from crappy voice removal software. A simplistic scale is there to guide your voice and the lyrics are shown right beneath it. All in all, very functional.

Sing! also works like a social platform. You can connect with and follow friends, you can send messages and invites.

Sing! encourages users to record their songs with others. The incentive is money. You can join others in duets or group collabs... or you can pay to get VIP membership. That's right. If you want to go at it alone, you need to pay up. The subscription is cheap enough, however, I'm not impressed by Smule's business ethics. Despite having a paid service, they still display ads between notifications. What's more, the ads also look very similar to regular posts, so that you're more likely to hit them accidentally. Not appreciated. To be fair though, there are a lot of free songs too.

If you're not in the mood for singing, or simply recording yourself talking (as some actually do), the Listen tab contains the most popular solo and duet recordings, updated regularly I presume.

Features

  • Sing solo, in duets, or as part of a group
  • Duet with the original artist!
  • Audio effects and audio tweaking
  • real-time pitch correction and reverb
  • Video filters
  • Messaging

Final Thoughts

Sing! did impress me on the technical side. The interface is very intuitive, the sound quality is excellent and the network runs fast. Although I wouldn't record myself there even if you'd pay me, I can understand the draw it exerts. Some users are really talented and produce good content.
